The Mona Lisa is in Room 711, called the Salle des États, in the Denon Wing on the first floor. From the main pyramid entrance, follow the signs to Italian Paintings — it's a 10-15 minute walk through the museum. The room is clearly signposted and almost impossible to miss because of the crowd flowing toward it.
Very crowded in peak season. Expect 50-200 people in the room at any time between 10 AM and 5 PM on weekdays in summer — more on weekends. The crowd forms a semi-circle behind a barrier, roughly 4-5 meters from the painting. Morning tours (arriving before 10:30 AM) have significantly fewer people. Evening visits on Wednesday or Friday after 6 PM are the least crowded.
The Mona Lisa is 77 × 53 cm — about the size of a large laptop screen. This surprises almost every visitor who sees it for the first time. The painting appears even smaller because it's displayed on a large dark wall across a spacious room, and because the crowd keeps you 4-5 meters away from it.
The Mona Lisa has been behind bulletproof glass since 1956, when it was damaged by a thrown rock. It was also stolen in 1911 (recovered 2 years later). The current case is climate-controlled to maintain ideal temperature and humidity for the 500-year-old panel painting. The glass can cause glare in photographs depending on your angle.
You cannot get within 4-5 meters — a red rope barrier keeps visitors back. Photography is permitted and you can take as long as you like at the barrier, but you cannot touch the case or get any closer. Some private after-hours tours arrange access with fewer people in the room, but still at the same viewing distance.

Avoid summer weekend afternoons and the first Sunday of the month entirely if crowd-free viewing is important to you.
The Salle des États also contains The Wedding at Cana (1563) by Veronese — a massive 6.7 × 9.9 metre painting covering the entire wall opposite the Mona Lisa. Most visitors are so focused on the Mona Lisa that they never turn around to see it, despite it being one of the largest paintings in the Louvre. A guide will make sure you don't miss it.
In August 1911, an Italian carpenter named Vincenzo Peruggia hid in the Louvre overnight and walked out with the Mona Lisa under his coat the next morning. The theft made international headlines and, more than anything else, transformed the Mona Lisa from a well-regarded Renaissance painting into a global icon. Peruggia was caught in Florence in 1913 trying to sell it — the painting was returned to the Louvre and became more famous than ever.
With context, absolutely. Without context, many visitors feel let down — it's smaller and more distant than they imagined. A guided tour that explains Leonardo's technique (sfumato, the enigmatic smile, the landscape), the 500-year history, and the theft makes the experience genuinely memorable. The painting itself is extraordinary — the problem is almost always inadequate preparation, not the painting.
