"Great tour covers many of the museum's highlights. Our guide provided excellent background information about specific pieces as well as an overview of the different styles and movements throughout art history. Skipping the line with the tour was a big advantage in such a busy place."

How to Plan Your Louvre Visit
Four decisions that determine whether your Louvre visit is memorable or overwhelming.
Decide: Guide or No Guide?
First-time visitors almost always say they wish they'd had a guide. The Louvre is the most complex museum in the world — context transforms what you see. Budget? A group tour starts at €13.
Book in Advance
Never buy tickets at the museum. The day-of queue at the pyramid is 1-3 hours on peak days. Book online for a timed-entry slot — or book a skip-the-line tour to use the reserved entrance.
Arrive Early or Late
9:00 AM opening is the best time — you'll be at the Mona Lisa before the 11 AM crowd. Evening visits on Wed/Fri (open until 9:45 PM) are even better — 60% fewer visitors after 6 PM.
Focus on 3–4 Wings, Not the Whole Museum
You cannot see the whole Louvre in one day. A great first visit covers: Denon Wing (Mona Lisa, Italian paintings, sculptures), Sully Wing (Venus de Milo, Egyptian antiquities). That's a full day.

What Visitors Say
"Tour was excellent. Our guide Fredrick was very knowledgeable and provided a fun, informative tour."
"Good tour. Organized. Avoided wasting time in unnecessary lines. Was able to see the most important pieces while learning about the museum, art history and specific pieces. Our guide was Claudia and she was excellent."
"Great tour. Saeed was wonderful and highly recommend this tour."
"Mauro was funny and really knowledgeable about the art work in the Louvre and the buildings themselves, highly recommended"
"This tour was great! Mathilde was a great guide, very informative, she kept us moving but also ensured everyone was able to see and enjoy the artwork she was explaining. She did a great job of reading the crowds to move us to a less crowded place in a room to maximize our viewing opportunities. This was our first time to the Louvre, and it honestly would have been overwhelming to tackle it on our own. Having this guided tour was a great way to see the famous spots but also get information on additional works of art. We were able to skip the line with our tour group when entering which was also a perk, and there was a safe space to tore our items until we left. We did stay a few hours after the tour to check out areas not covered that we were interested in seeing. Very organized tour, definitely recommend if this is your first time at the Louvre."
"Claudia was very knowledgeable and clearly a very interested experienced guide. The louvre is an amazing collection of art cultural history from Europe and North Africa. Claudia made everything very interesting and was very friendly and helpful."
"Severina was an excellent tour guide! She infused humor with history and made the time fly by! We felt that she hit all of the can’t miss highlights. Highly recommend."
"Tour was totally interesting. Omar was a great guide with a lot of knowledge."
"Mauro was a friendly, informative guide. We really enjoyed our tour of the Louvre. Great getting the history behind a lot of the pieces of art. The Louvre is so busy, so was nice to have an expert with us. As for the Louvre… they need to do some crowd control at the Mona Lisa. It was a zoo !!! Why not have rope lanes to direct all the people!"
"Absolutely loved our tour. Lili was a fantastic charismatic guide who brought the history of the Louvre to life. Booking was easy and the tour was well organised. Would highly recommend!"
"Our tour of the Louvre was amazing. The meeting place was very easy to find and getting into the museum was seamless. We saw all the highlights and some extra areas. Our tour guide was great! He was very knowledgeable and friendly. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour of the Louvre."
"Everything was ok, our guide Miryam was fantastic."

"Our guide Florence was very knowledgeable and a great tour guide. Easy to listen to. Outstanding guid"
"Saeed did an excellent job of explaining and enlightening us on many pieces of art. It was obvious that he was quite knowledgeable! And he was kind and thoughtful to the people on his tour."
"FLORENCE!!! Nuestra guía turística fue excepcional. Puntual en tiempo y descripción de las obras. Nos encanto"

"Claudia was an excellent guide! We enjoyed our time with Claudia. There really is so much to see. Appreciate the lockers and Claudia’s expertise on the paintings."

"Sayeed provided an excellent tour, supported his presentation with humorous anecdotes and answered all of the questions from the group with kindness and authority. When I saw the do-it-yourself line (it was too long for me to photo even with a wide angle lens), I knew I made the right decision with the “skip the line” guided tour."

"The tour was excellent, we really appreciated the speedy priority entrance, awesome guide, and explanations about the history and relevance. Would have liked to know more specifically in the tour's explanation what exhibits would be guided and which would be on your own at the end just for planning purposes."

Practical questions answered for first-time Louvre visitors.
Book in advance and arrive at opening time. The combination of a pre-reserved ticket and a 9:00 AM arrival means you'll be at the Mona Lisa before 9:30 AM — before the crowds arrive and before tours from other hotels have assembled. Every other tip is secondary to these two decisions.
For a morning visit, aim for 8:50 AM — 10 minutes before the 9:00 AM opening. This gives you time to find your entrance, check your bag if needed, and be in the first group heading toward the highlights. By 9:30 AM the museum is filling quickly; by 10:30 AM the Mona Lisa room is at full crowd density for the rest of the day. See our full timing guide for hour, day, and seasonal breakdowns.
The Carrousel du Louvre underground entrance (accessible from 99 rue de Rivoli or the Palais Royal–Musée du Louvre metro) has the shortest wait and is used by most skip-the-line tours. The main pyramid entrance is iconic but has the longest queue for walk-up visitors. If you have a pre-reserved ticket or are on a tour, you may use the reserved lane at the pyramid instead.
Yes — highly recommended. The Louvre stays open until 9:45 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays, and visitor numbers after 6 PM drop significantly (roughly 60% fewer people than midday). Evening light through the pyramid is beautiful. Evening visits work well combined with a dinner reservation near the Palais Royal or Les Halles. Arrive at 5:30-6:00 PM for the best balance of light and crowd reduction. See our best time to visit guide for the full hour-by-hour breakdown.
For a first visit, focus on two wings rather than trying to see everything. The classic route: enter via the Denon Wing, head directly to the Mona Lisa (Room 711) before crowds build, then explore the Italian sculpture gallery (Winged Victory of Samothrace) on the way out. Cross to the Sully Wing for Venus de Milo and Egyptian antiquities. Allow 3-4 hours. Trying to see Richelieu Wing too in one visit usually results in exhausted, rushed viewing. See our self-guided 2-hour highlights route for stop-by-stop timing with room numbers.
Wear comfortable, flat shoes — you'll walk 3-5 km on marble and stone floors. Bring a light layer (the museum is air-conditioned, noticeably cool in summer). A small daypack for water and a snack is fine — bags larger than 55×35×25 cm must be checked at the free cloakroom. A portable phone charger is useful if you're using the museum app for navigation.
Yes. The Louvre has several cafés and restaurants including Café Marly (in the Richelieu Wing, with views of the pyramid — worth a coffee even if you don't eat), the Grand Louvre brasserie in the underground Carrousel du Louvre, and various snack outlets. Quality varies; the Café Marly is the most atmospheric but also the most expensive. Prices throughout are typical Paris museum/tourist pricing.
It's useful but not essential. The official Louvre app includes navigation maps, audio guides for major works, and information on all collections. It's free and works offline. If you're visiting without a guide, the app fills some of the context gap. If you have a guide, the app is unnecessary during the tour but useful for independent exploration afterward.
The five most common: (1) Arriving without a pre-reserved ticket and facing a 2-hour queue. (2) Trying to see the entire museum in one visit — impossible, overwhelming. (3) Not booking a guide and leaving without understanding what they saw. (4) Visiting the Mona Lisa last, by which time the room is at maximum crowd density. (5) Not turning around in the Mona Lisa room to see The Wedding at Cana — one of the museum's most spectacular paintings, almost always ignored.
Budget 3-4 hours minimum for a guided tour experience (2-2.5 hours guided plus some independent exploration). If visiting independently, 4-5 hours for the Denon and Sully wings without feeling rushed. Add 30 minutes for queuing, bag check, and getting oriented even with a pre-reserved ticket. Factor in travel time — the Louvre is most easily reached by metro (Palais Royal–Musée du Louvre, line 1 or 7).
